The Risks of Hair Transplants

shiftframe • January 17, 2022

Hair transplants have become increasingly popular among both men and women. However, it’s important to remember that they are medical surgeries so there are still risks for complications. It’s also important that high medical standards are kept to ensure patient safety.

In addition to health and safety precautions, a hair transplant will cost a considerable sum of money to have done correctly. The cost of hair transplants has dropped dramatically, but to have a reputable clinic perform the procedure will still cost a reasonable amount. This cost can vary depending on the amount of work that needs to be done. Even with a reputable clinic, there are still some risks associated. Continue reading to find out more about some of the risks associated with hair transplants.

Excessive Harvesting

Skill is required in any surgery. With hair transplant surgeries, skill isn’t only required during the procedure itself, but also in planning how much hair is to be harvested from the donor site and where that hair should come from. In some cases of poor quality transplants, too much hair was harvested from the patients’ donor site. This will cause pain and discomfort during the procedure and recovery process. Excessive harvesting can also cause ugly wounds that make social life even more difficult.

Unnecessary Scarring

Less experienced surgeons have been known to cause unnecessary scarring in the donor areas as well as the transplant areas.

Skin or Hair Infections

Infections can occur when proper hygiene practices and medical standards are neglected. These infections can occur in the skin on the surface of the scalp, as well as in the hair follicles themselves. While these infections are commonly treatable, they are not necessary and can cause undesired side effects.

Transplant Failure

A less skilled surgeon may lack the necessary expertise to ensure the follicles are transplanted correctly. In fact, one of the most common outcomes of inadequate transplants is transplanted hairs failing to take successfully.

Other Options

While most hair transplants carried out by reputable clinics are successful, it’s important to understand the risks associated with the procedure. However, hair transplants aren’t the only option for hair loss. Scalp micropigmentation has become much more popular in recent years due to its non-invasive nature and successful results. Scalp micropigmentation, or SMP, is essentially a scalp tattoo that gives the appearance of a full head of hair. At SMP Ink , we manually insert hair follicle replications using precise custom pigments one by one to recreate a healthy head of hair. Our team has over a decade of experience in scalp micropigmentation procedures. Contact us for a free consultation.
