Hair loss affects many Americans—one in five Americans experiences some form of hair loss. The most common type of hair loss is known as male or female pattern baldness. What is Male Pattern Balding?

Gradual hair loss from the scalp, occurring in men, is classified as male pattern balding. This specific condition is known to affect over half of men. Male pattern balding is a genetic condition, which means there is no cure. It can’t be prevented or reversed. However, there are some options to help create the look of fuller hair.

When Does Male Pattern Hair Loss Happen?

Most of the time, male pattern balding happens between the ages of 40 and 70. However, men can begin losing their hair as early as their 20s. Hair loss is typically gradual and might only affect the crown or hairline, depending on the individual.

What is Female Pattern Baldness?

Female pattern balding is also a genetic condition that affects females. It tends to diffuse, which means that gradual thinning begins through the crown area and eventually continues down towards the temples. Female pattern hair loss may stop with thinning and not turn into full-blown bald patches. There is also no cure for female pattern baldness.

Are There Any Treatments Available?

There are some options available to treat both male and female pattern baldness. One of these is hair transplant surgery. A hair transplant procedure permanently restores hair to areas where balding has occurred. Another option that is increasing in popularity is SMP or scalp micropigmentation. Unlike hair transplant surgery, this option is not a surgical procedure. It involves an artist creating the illusion of thicker, fuller hair by essentially tattooing a patient’s scalp. It is done by having a skilled artist apply pigment into the scalp to create the illusion of fuller hair.
