What Is Alopecia?
If you’ve seen a lot of extra hair on your pillow, brush, or shower drain, or you’ve noticed odd little bald spots in the mirror, you might have an autoimmune disorder called alopecia areata. When you have an autoimmune disease, your immune system attacks your own body. With alopecia areata, the hair follicles are attacked. This causes the hair to come out, often in clumps the size and shape of a quarter. If this sounds familiar, you may need to look into alopecia treatment from SMP INK.
Alopecia symptoms
If you are suffering from alopecia, you may have some or all of the following symptoms:
- Patchy coin-shaped hair loss, mainly from scalp
- Itching or burning sensation in the area before hair loss
- Hair grows thinner near the base around bald spots
- Pinpoint dents and white spots appear in nails
- Rough nails
Some episodes of alopecia may only last a few months, causing baldness and thinning in patchy areas for a small length of time. Many people with alopecia can recover from an episode within a year. However, episodes of alopecia are likely to occur again in the future.
How to know if you have alopecia
Most doctors can diagnose alopecia areata very easily by examining the symptoms. As the symptoms are mainly visual and pretty straight forward, an immediate diagnosis is not uncommon. Some doctors may perform a skin biopsy or examine hairs under a microscope to confirm.
The amount of hair loss is different in everyone. Some people lose it only in a few spots. Others lose a lot.
It’s rare, but some people may lose all of the hair on their head, including eyelashes, facial hair, eyebrows, and scalp hair (this is known as alopecia areata totalis). There are even some cases where hair is lost on the entire body (alopecia areata universalis).Â
Each case of alopecia areata is different. Sometimes, hair grows back but falls out again later. In others, hair grows back for good. Some patients never have their hair grow back.Â
